Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious. (1 Pet 2:7a)

Peter is talking about the Lord Jesus Christ in this part of his letter, and contrasting the attitude of those that believe with those that have rejected Christ. He says that for believers, Christ is precious or in other words of high worth or value. What is meant by this? We value people to different degrees. Those that are passing acquaintances receive less of our attention than those that are close to us. This is only natural, because we have only limited time and energy to spend on those that we know. To parents, their children are precious. To a spouse, their partner is precious! We spend more time in these relationships than others and rightly so. It is, of course, possible to get these relationships wrong! The children or spouse may not receive the attention they deserve, or, alternatively these relationships can become so consuming that they exclude all others. Returning to Peter’s comment, why is the Lord precious to us as believers? We recognise that work that He has done saving us from sin and the judgement due for our sins, and bring us back into a living relationship with the Father. We have experienced and continue to experience the love that He has for us!

How does the preciousness of someone demonstrate itself? Firstly, we will want to spend time with that person. Secondly, we will want to please them in all we do. Thirdly, we will want to do things for them. What does this mean for us as Christians? We will want to spend time with the Lord praying to Him and waiting on Him to see if He has anything to say to us. We will spend time studying His word to understand what does and does not please Him. We will spend time with other Christians rejoicing together in the love He has for us. We will spend time, as we are able, teaching others about the Lord and how wonderful He is.

When you consider your life, can you say that Jesus is precious, or of great worth, to you? Can this be demonstrated in the priorities that you have and the way you live your life? Will people know that to YOU, ‘He is precious?’
